Focus on the eyes, pay attention to the pose and body language, and compose with care.
Also, shoot both horizontal and vertical frames. This way you will have several options to choose from, and you can decide at leisure which frame works best.
Photographs are taken by Nikon D700, no Strobe, no Flash. Portraits are taken in natural day light.
