Wide Angle lenses for environmental portraits
A lot of people believe that you can't able to shoot portraits with wide angle lenses. Because wide angle lens have some short of distortions. But I always go beyond the conventions. I am sure that you will able to shoot some interesting perspectives while doing portrait photography.
Environmental portraits always describe a story and it is very easy to shoot. For shooting environmental portrait you need to use your widest end of your wide angle lens. Zoom out your wide angle lens at widest end and get to close to your subject. You mast remember to keep your subject at the middle of the frame and take the surrounding as backdrop. Taking main subject in middle of the frame will ensure you minimum distortion.
Normal lenses for candid shooting
A 50mm normal lens is a good option for portraiture purpose. A 50 mm lens is inexpensive, small in size, very fast focusing capability, extremely sharp and free from any kind of optical distortion. A regular practice will let you capture unplanned and candid moments perfectly without looking from viewfinder. Due to its large aperture you can able to capture portraiture in low lighting conditions and without using flash.
Prime lenses for sharp portraits
A 35mm, 60mm, 85mm, 100mm and 105mm prime lenses are also good option for portraiture. Prime lenses have some great advantages to shoot posed portraiture. Prime lenses are more sharper then the zoom lens. Prime lens allows using large aperture in low lighting conditions. The control of depth of field and sharpness is always attractive in portraiture, so most of the professionals like to use prime lenses for high quality images.
Telephoto lenses for beautiful bokeh
A telephoto lens always makes some stunning portraits. Telephoto lenses allow shot head and soldering portrait between the focal length 85mm and 135mm. and it also allow to taking shot from a slight distance from the subject.
The most important advantage of telephoto lens is it allows you to experimenting shallow depth of field effects. In this kind of photographs, the subject's face is sharp and the background is beautifully out of focus. To getting this kind of effects, use a wide aperture value like f/2.8 or f/4 or f/5.6 and get as close to your subject as possible.
Fisheye lenses for Creative crazy fun
You can use fisheye lenses to shoot some unique and funny creative portraits. You can use the natural distortion of fisheye lenses for your creative shots. Use the lens very close to someone's face and you can distort their face. That is really funny. In between you can make a person tall or short by using low angle of fisheye lens.
